What is adventure race?
Adventure race is a combination of different outdoor sports like trekking, alpine climbing, cayaking, mountain biking, rafting and many others. The racing arena for such sport discipline are wild and inaccessible terrains. Combination and sequence of different disciplines depends on terrain and sorrounding landscape. Races can last from couple of hours to couple of weeks, from 40 (short urban city races) to 1000 kilometers (Raid Gauloises in Vietnam).
Rules usually say that teams must have 2 or 4 team members and in most cases they must include at least one female racer.
In a given time, they must pass all the disciplines together and pass through all check points in time. Meanwhile they must carry a map and all team and personal equipment needed for each race stage. They must finish as a team. If one team member is unable to finish, the entire team is disqualified.
Race course description, discipline schedule and check point times are disclosed to the teams one day before the race. That's why the teams must be prepared to quickly respond to new challenges. During the race teams have access to their equipment where they can change the gear and fill up the food/drink supplies.
Team spirit, physicall preparedness, readiness to finds your way in the wilderness, equipment planning, food and rest planning, weather influences are only a few parameters for a success. In this sport there is only one rule: You're strong as your weakest link, you're fast as your slowest link.
