Carpathian Adventure 2007
The Journal of a competitor Carpathian Adventure 2007
By Catalin Pobega – Team OZON, Bucharest, Romania
7.34am. Early morning of 9th August 2007, first day of the great competition Carpathian Adventure 2007. We just got down from the bus, heading straight to the start line. For me it’s the first time when I participate at this kind of contest and I feel my heart biting fast. Everybody around me is trying to have a positive thinking saying jokes and laughing. My team encourage me.
7.45am. Iringo is lunching the signal racket, meaning that the CA competition has just started with the trekking section. It’s time to make the first step of the 86 km journey. Some teams start to run from the very begging, while others go slowly. God be with us. Magic light in Retezat Mountains. There is no time for us to sit and look at the beautiful landscape. Concentrating on our steps and breathing is what we had to do if we wanted to finish the race in time. 72 hours was the time limit to complete all sections. One member of the team get feet injures. We had to stop often to check the conditions of our feet and bandage them. Why am I doing this ?-was the question coming over and over my mind. Plenty of time to give a proper answer to that, as the length of the trekking section was 86 km.
8.43 pm. Beautiful sunset at checkpoint nr 4, Saua Retezatului. First day of the competition is coming to the end, the night comes very fast but we still have 3 more checkpoints to touch. Good by sun, no time to rest.
4.51 am. 10th August 2007. Today is my birthday, I am 30 years old. It’s cold and almost freezing. We are very tired as we could only take a short nap of 2 hours in that night.
6.23 pm. Think fast, concentrate and make it float. We had 4 tires, ropes and wood in order to make a boat. Teamwork was the key word for this section.
6.33 pm. Full action. Each member of the team is giving 100 % paddling. After this we will do the bike section.
10.37am. 11th August 2007, last day of the competition. We spend all night biking and we still have all day to go. 120 km of heavy roads in Vulcan Mountains full of mud as the rain stopped only to begin again.
01.15 pm. Yellow face full of mud. Wet skin after the long showers taken from the cold rain. We pray it will come to an end, as soon as possible.
5.02 pm. Finish line… is this a dream or a reality ? Reaching the finish line was the most wanted thing during the race by all 30 master teams. Only 10 teams passed the finish line, and our team was one of it.
Sunday morning, 12th August 2007. As the other teams finish, we congratulate them. A hot tea and watermelon is received by each member of the team after passing the finish line. This small thing brings smile on each tired face. Time to see the final results. Our team won second place in the master race. During competition, everybody in the base camp could watch the intermediary results as the organizers print them on paper and also post them on the internet.
12.30 am. All the competitors are gather to congratulate the winners and to thank the organizers for their big effort. What a huge success, as it was the first year for Carpathian Adventure in the EuroAdventure race. Time to say good bye. A kid with CA t-shirt giving applause. Young spirit, optimistic and full of joy . This is what Carpathian Adventure experience meant for me.
